Magicians are excellent at misdirection, and we can learn from them for our writing, too. If you're crafting a mystery story, you need to rely on misdirection to lead your readers down false paths without lying to them or hiding the true magic of your plot. In this workshop, writers will learn how to take the visual aspects of a magic show and convert them into literary methods for mysteries. This workshop will have two learning lessons, and one writing/feedback assignment, but you don't need to have a story in the works to participate.
Syllabus
Lesson One: Why Misdirection is So Effective, and How Magicians Use it
Writers will learn why misdirection works so well in a mystery and the science/psychology behind visual magic.

Lesson Two: From Stage to Page
Writers will learn how to take the idea of visual misdirection and rework it into a piece of writing.

Lesson Three: Feedback
Writers will be asked to create a scene where characters first discover a mystery, using methods of misdirection, and will be given feedback on the effectiveness of their methods. (Writer's may post a scene from a story they currently are working on)
Class Format
Savvy Authors' workshops are held on a forum: a bulletin board based system. You will receive a reminder notice one day prior to the start of the workshop that includes instructions on how to access the workshop forum. If you have not received instructions by the day the workshop begins, please check your spam filter.

The forum will be available the morning (EST) of the day the workshop starts and will remain accessible to all participants thereafter. You will also be given simple instructions on how to create a PDF of all your discussions along with our privacy and data retention policy.

Great information in the class, but not enough. For the one week class, there were only two lessons with only a few points to make. I expected more. If I had spent this much on, say, a book for this information, I wouldn't have been very disappointed. However, there was also the opportunity to post a scene for feedback, and that does add considerable value.
