And Welcome from your Presenter! Intros please!

    BACK IN PRINT

    Introduction

Welcome to a very fast, very packed, one-week of Independent Publishing data. That’s what putting yourself back in print is – independent publishing. Sounds so much better than self-publishing, doesn’t it?

I’ll be talking mostly about how an author can take their backlist, all those out of print titles that readers can only find by accident when cruising a used bookstore or via those handy used book dealers who use Amazon, Barnes and Noble, AbeBooks, and other online listings of available titles, and turning them into moneymakers again. HOWEVER, the same information works if you are interested in becoming your own publisher. And there are a number of viable reasons for doing that...I'll spell them out, actually. Later.

I’m Beth Daniels and as Beth Henderson I have 13 books published by either Harlequin/Silhouette, Leisure, Zebra, or a now defunct e-book publisher – that are all out-of-print.

Or they were. I did the journey first to POD to make them available once more, and then took the leap to Kindle. I also published a historical that I loved, that Beta readers loved, but that publishers kept turning down with the words “American West is so hard to sell today.” And I published it myself. Had to get it off my desk so I could move forward!

Whichever reason you've turned up in this workshop, you’ll find a sympathetic ear here.

Here’s what we’ll be going over this week:

Monday: Print on Demand (POD), what to expect, where to go
Tuesday: Formatting your manuscript for POD
    Wednesday: Creating a cover
Thursday: Loading and ordering your book
Friday: Taking the cover and manuscript to Kindle
Saturday: Doing it all over again for PubIt! (which is how you get on Nook)
    Sunday: Final Q&A

But first, let’s find out who’s stopped by and tell us what brought you through the door today.

Briefly, I write as both Beth Henderson and J.B. Dane, spinning contemporary romantic comedy, historical romance set in the Old West, romantic-suspense, did seven YA books based on ye olde SAVED BY THE BELL series, and besides presiding over a gazillion writing workshops (or so it sometimes seems) I’m working on a couple Steampunk titles currently. I like variety and my 26 published title backlist proves it. Currently I have eight previously published titles back-in-print and one independently published title available through Lulu.com and Kindle, with things inching their way onto Nook now.

Your turn now. I’ll be back later on Monday, Valentine's Day, with the first lecture.

And because our guardian angel moderator said not to post things in the Tread unless so directed, you are hereby directed to do just that. We'll keep all the introductions in one place then. :-)

    Hi, all,

I'm Karina Fabian, and I write mostly science fiction and fantasy, though my most recent novel, Neeta Lyffe, Zombie Exterminator, is a comedic horror. I've also written a small devotional with my father. I've only been published for a few years now, but love the idea of putting my backlist on Kindle, especially at a cheap price to draw readers for my other works. Many of my books are part of series.

One question I do have is what does "independent publishing" do if later you have a chance to publish your backlist with a bigger trad publisher.
    Happy Writing!

    Hi Karina!

Good question. For the most part, you simply end any contacts you had or delete the file at Kindle and PubIt! (the Nook link). I'll bet the publisher would be able to tell you as well should any questions arise. Probably 30 days of having no book available is what would result.

Gloria here. I don't have any books published...yet. But expect to in the near future. I write primarily suspense and adventure driven historicals. With the publishing world twirling on it's keister, your topic is definitely a need-to-know so that I can manage my writing career.

Hello, I'm Sherry Gloag, and am here because I want to learn about formatting for kindle and how to create my own book covers. I know little about the digi scene and am anxious to learn what I can so it takes the fear out of all the processes.
Thanks Beth for offering this workshop.

You'll have to endure the POD days before we get to the Kindle but as we do cover creation along the way, the time won't be a waste, Sherry. Promise!

    Hi Beth,

I'm Anna Taylor Sweringen. My novel was available in print and now only as an e-book. I want to be prepared to make it available again in print when the rights revert to me so thought this would be a good workshop to attend.
