Characterization & POV– The Heart & Eyes of a Story

Instructor: Jaye Roycraft. This is an introductory yet thorough workshop for authors of any genre on arguably the most important elements of writing—characterization and POV. Without a good grasp on characterization, an author would have cardboard cutouts moving through a plot with little purpose—characters without dimension that no one would care about. And point of view is right behind characterization in importance to a story. It’s much more than simply deciding whether to write in first person or third person. In fact, characterization and POV are very much connected—good use of POV can actually build characterization very effectively. Also included are lessons on internal and external conflict, building character goals and obstacles, and how to convey emotion thru POV.

Hell's Warrior
The vampire-mortal war known as “Hell” ended twenty years ago, but peace has been hard for Chicago’s doyen, vampire Che Kincade. Compromises come hard for a half-breed undead warrior whose roots run centuries-deep in violence. Still, Cade has managed at last to make peace bearable. A secret affair with his mortal counterpart, Mayor Deborah Dayton, ensures that their weekly meetings are accompanied by wonderfully delicious clandestine sex. Tonight, though, just hours after their usual tryst, Cade's house-of-cards peace tumbles when news comes that a high-profile murder has taken place in the city. Soon Cade is wanted first for rape, then murder. He goes on the run, and when the people Cade cares about keep dying, he sheds his peace chief mien to return to that which he knows best—killing...
