Colourful characters - creating and writing great characters

Instructor: Nicole Murphy. Kurt Vonnegut's second rule is 'Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for'. How do you do that? Bring a character with you and let's see how we can make them stand out from the crowd.

The first part of the course will consist of activities designed to give writers a further insight into the character. Writers will share their issues with their character, discuss what makes a good character and go through three exercises to help them delve deeper. The second part will look at how to write that character in an active, interesting manner. Writers will look at using action, reaction and interaction as the method for revealing character to the reader. Work of authors will be studied and writers will then take on the task of writing at least three paragraphs, each showing their character in a different scenario.

During the class, writers will complete a character outline and character interrogation activity that will provide greater perspective of their character; writers will complete several paragraphs featuring their character in a variety of scenes to practice techniques of revealing character in the story; writers will have a greater understanding of the need for more rounded characters; writers will appreciate the impact of character on plot and setting and vice versa.

The Dream of Asarlai trilogy
For centuries, the gadda have worked to keep their identity secret from the rapidly expanding human race. All this is now at risk — the most terrible of gadda teachings, the Forbidden Texts, have been stolen and the race is on to find them.

The Guardians – the six most powerful gadda alive – are tasked with finding the Texts and stopping the mysterious Asarlai. As the threat builds and lives are put at risk, three of the guardians find their lives overturned when they meet a partner who challenges and fulfills them.

Can they win their love AND save not just the gadda but the world?
