Keeping the Tension Alive in Romance Novels WITHOUT Sex

Instructor: Susan Meier. Everyone knows that sex scenes provide high points and turning points for romance novels. Every one knows that the fallout after a sex scene can provide some of the most dramatic segments of the book. But what do you do if you don’t want to have consummated love scenes in your book? Can you have a book that’s as dramatic or MORE dramatic?

Susan Meier thinks you can. Actually, she believes books without sex can be good enough that no one even notices there is no consummated love scene…and she’s written 47 books without sex to prove it.

Learn how to use tension, the push/pull of conflict and even the characters themselves to tell your story with drama and honesty and create a book that will stay with readers long after they’ve read “the end.”

Topics include:

1. We live in a sex-obsessed culture, but not all of life is about sex.

2. Tension, keeping readers on the edges of their seats.

3. External conflicts are the vehicle for your characters.

4. Internal conflicts are all about incorrect core beliefs that spring from real life and real pasts.

5. “Correcting” incorrect core beliefs.

6. Using your heroine.

7. Using the push-pull caused by conflict.

8. Pulling it all together.

INSTRUCTOR:
A one-time legal secretary and director of a charitable foundation, Susan Meier found her bliss when she became a full-time novelist for Harlequin. She’s visited ski lodges and candy factories for “research” and works in her pajamas.

But the real joy of her job is creating stories about women for women. In her 50 published novels, she’s tackled issues like infertility, losing a child and becoming widowed, and worked through them with her characters.

Her Christmas book, KISSES ON HER CHRISTMAS LIST, is a nominee for a REVIEWER’S CHOICE AWARD and an RT 4-1/2 star top pick for December 2011. In 2012 she has connected books (a duet) in June and August…THE TYCOON’S SECRET DAUGHTER and NANNY FOR THE MILLIONAIRE’S TWINS. NANNY FOR THE MILLIONAIRE’S TWINS was so dramatic Susan and her editor couldn’t proofread the ending because they were crying too hard! (We hope the copyeditor had better luck.)

Her popular website susanmeier.com has recipes, workshops for writers and short stories featuring the characters in previous books. Every Monday morning she devotes her Dear Readers blog to the craft of writing.
