Mining for Emotions - Leave 'em Weeping, Leave 'em Laughing

Instructor: Barbara Plum. Readers read for emotion.  They want the highs, the lows, the dejection and the ecstasy to give them an escape on the page.  Too often writers go with the most superficial emotions, failing to mine the many ways to deepen their stories.

Writing emotions is all about words.

Words are the only tools we writers possess.

In this 5-day workshop, we’ll explore:

• Words that trigger emotions
• Character traits that trigger emotions
• Situations that trigger emotions
• Dialogue that triggers emotions

In addition to examples from published authors, we’ll use your WIPs.  By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to expand your characters’ emotional range from mad, glad, sad to a spectrum of deeper emotions.

Barbara Plum lives with her darker alter ego, Allie Hawkins, near the exit off the Fast Lane in Silicon Valley.  SV, known for its big deals that can make and break millionaires in the same day, is the setting for her latest romantic suspense, Presumed Guilty.  In addition to writing, both authors like walking around the soothing Bay, blatantly eavesdropping on some of the Valley’s wannabe movers and shakers, and reading a new blood-curdling horror or suspense novel.

All workshop registrations include FREE Basic Membership in Savvy Authors.

Savvy Authors' workshops are held on a forum: a bulletin board based system. Instead of an invitation to join a loop you will receive a reminder notice one or two days prior to the start of the workshop that includes your user name, password and instructions on how to access the workshop forum. The forum will be available the morning (EST) of the day the workshop starts and will remain accessible to all participants thereafter, even after the workshop ends (unless otherwise stated by the moderator).

Participants can "subscribe" to the forum at any time after receiving initial access to automatically receive notice of all posts made to the forum via email. Participants will receive a link in each email which will take them directly to that area of the forum where one can post a reply.

A moderator is assigned for each workshop and will introduce himself/herself on the first day of class. The moderator is available to answer any website questions, assist the instructor, and address any concerns. We urge every participant to contact the moderator immediately if you feel the workshop experience falls below expectations so we may address issues promptly before the workshop ends.
