| The Business of Creative Writing - Pitching, Querying and Promoting | |
Instructor: Alice Osborn. These days even if you're a great writer, no one will know unless you work the business of writing. Writing is a war of attrition, and the writers who keep working on their craft and think like an entrepreneur are the ones who will succeed. In this workshop experienced instructor and writer Alice Osborn will discuss networking, maintaining submission logs, tracking expenses and income, cash flow, and social media, blogs and marketing. This workshop will also help you with crafting that all-important query letter and making sure you have the confidence to sell yourself and your writing. All genres and all levels are welcome to attend this three week intensive workshop which will include video and webcasts. Participants are recommended to have a website and/or blog prior to beginning this class.
Class 1: Intros, mastering the 30-second elevator speech, basic networking and marketing. We'll discuss writing your business plan and your bio/profile.
Class 2: Social media. How to use Twitter, Linked In, Facebook and YouTube effectively. We'll also talk about traditional marketing and sales such as press releases and advertising. We'll talk about the value of e-newsletters and blog posts.
Class 3: Query letters and submission logs. We'll also cover general etiquette guidelines and public speaking skills.

 | Alice Osborn, M.A. is the author of two books of poetry, Unfinished Projects (Main Street Rag, 2010) and Right Lane Ends (Catawba, 2006); she is a manuscript editor, freelance writer and successful blogger. Alice teaches creative writing in schools and in community settings where she uses sensory images and road-tested prompts to stimulate her students’ best work. Her work appears in Raleigh’s News and Observer, The Pedestal Magazine, and in numerous journals and anthologies. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband and two children.
