Our first Congratulations this week goes out to a Savvy Authors member Paula Millhouse. Boroughs Publishing Group has contracted two short stories from her for their Lunchbox Romance line. Three Wishes, a romantic fantasy fairy tale set in Savannah, Georgia, her hometown. And Dragonstone, a romantic fantasy. Congratulations, Paula!

Shelley Munro won the 2012 Psyche Award in The Romance Studio's annual CAPA awards for her book, Lone Wolf, published by Samhain Publishing. She also contracted a new story called Stoned, with Ellora's Cave. Congratulations, Shelley!

Elisabeth Staab signed books four and five of her Chronicles of Yavn Series with Sourcebooks. Congratulations, Elisabeth!

Our first Congratulations this week goes out to a Savvy Authors member Alexis Morgan. She accepted a contract for a novella that will be part of an anthology entitled Christmas on Main Street, a November 2013 release from Signet. The story will be set in Snowberry Creek, Alexis's new contemporary series that will debut in August 2013. Congratulations, Alexis!

Julie Anne Lindsey's YA Suspense, currently titled Deceived, was sold to Merit Press. The release is slated for Fall 2013. Congratulations, Julie!

You spent years writing through rejections before being published in 2009 with Seduced by Shadows (Signet). What kept you going during this time and what can you share about surviving rejection with aspiring authors?

In addition to writing, you are on the board of Passionate Ink, managing the newsletter and Member Milestones. You've also written articles for Savvy ("About Pen Names" and "Importance of the Author Website"). What is the most rewarding part for you about taking active roles in professional writer organizations like RWA and websites like Savvy?

When you’re browsing in a bookstore, what attracts you first to an author you haven’t yet read? For me, it’s the book cover. As a mystery reader and writer, I’m attracted by a certain type of cover and repelled by others. There are many books I would never have considered opening, just because of their cover art. At least, that was true before my first mystery novel was published.


When Poison Pen, was picked up by Penguin’s NAL, my editor and I met at the Malice Domestic mystery conference and walked around the dealer’s room together. I pointed out covers that I liked and, more important to me, those that I didn’t, so she would be able to offer input to the art department when it was time to design the covers for my books. Mine are tales of psychological suspense, featuring Claudia Rose, a forensic handwriting expert whose entry into criminal investigations comes mainly through her clients. Claudia’s cases sometimes end up with her presenting expert testimony in court (as I do in real life), so it seemed a no-brainer that my covers should look more like The Firm than The Cat Who....
