As many of you know, last November Savvy Authors, in conjunction with Entangled Publishing, held the Entangled Smack Down event. Aspiring authors were offered the unique opportunity to receive mentoring from Entangled editors to help take their usual Nano efforts to a new level, along with an amazing first prize: a book contract to one lucky member of the winning team. Five million words later (yes, Five Million!), more than one contract would be offered and several writers would step into the world of published authors. This week we are happy to turn the Spotlight on a brand shiny new romantic suspense author, Teri Ann Stanley. Teri took a chance last November and jumped into the Smack Down event, never thinking she would win. Well win she did! This January she got the call of a lifetime offering her a publishing contract with Entangled.

It's a heartwarming story with all the elements of premise, character and plot neatly in place. Luckily, this one is true.

At some point in your writing and speaking life, you’ll be called to introduce a speaker for your conference, panel, awards ceremony or monthly book club meeting. In the past maybe you didn’t have anything prepared and winged it or maybe your speaker didn’t give you anything beforehand. It went OK. No one made a beeline for the exits. But you knew in your heart you could do better. You are a leader and you need to know how to introduce someone properly.

Giving a great introduction will not only make your speaker feel valued and credible, your audience will also be grateful for your preparation. They’ll feel valued. With a strong introduction from you they’ll be mentally prepared, ready to listen and will look forward to welcoming the speaker. You’ll also look like someone who knows what they’re doing and this can lead to increased book sales, clients and opportunities.

This week we are turning the Spotlight on Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Paranormal Romance author Jessa Slade. Stellar reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and RT Times for her work is just one aspect of this multi-published author. With a tagline like: “Love Conquers All...Which Explains the Scars”, you know you’re in for an interesting time. Jessa pulls no punches as we talk about what it takes to publish, why you never stop learning and a brief stop in the Twilight Zone to talk about carnivorous aphrodisiac clams. You just never know where the mind of a writer will take you.

You spent years writing through rejections before being published in 2009 with Seduced by Shadows (Signet). What kept you going during this time and what can you share about surviving rejection with aspiring authors?

When you’re browsing in a bookstore, what attracts you first to an author you haven’t yet read? For me, it’s the book cover. As a mystery reader and writer, I’m attracted by a certain type of cover and repelled by others. There are many books I would never have considered opening, just because of their cover art. At least, that was true before my first mystery novel was published.

When Poison Pen, was picked up by Penguin’s NAL, my editor and I met at the Malice Domestic mystery conference and walked around the dealer’s room together. I pointed out covers that I liked and, more important to me, those that I didn’t, so she would be able to offer input to the art department when it was time to design the covers for my books. Mine are tales of psychological suspense, featuring Claudia Rose, a forensic handwriting expert whose entry into criminal investigations comes mainly through her clients. Claudia’s cases sometimes end up with her presenting expert testimony in court (as I do in real life), so it seemed a no-brainer that my covers should look more like The Firm than The Cat Who....
