A Spell for World Building (For the Advanced Witch/Warlock)by Shereen Vedam

“The magic of Faerie is not an end in itself, its virtue is in its operations:

among these are satisfaction of certain primordial human desires.”
J.R. Tolkien, On Fairy Stories (a)

World building is not just for fairy stories. Readers demand a credible world in every fictional book they pick up. Whether it is an entirely made-up land or a small town in a well-understood contemporary or historical setting, the world in which our characters live needs to feel real to our readers.

Wikipedia (b) describes world building as follows: “World building often involves the creation of maps, a back story, and people for the world.”

Reverse Engineering Your Alien Worlds Or The Unseen Hand of God by Lynda K. Scott

        Published: November 17th, 2012  Views: 263
    Article Preview

Well now. That title sounds a tad convoluted, doesn't it? But…as authors we are the unseen hand of 'God' and we are master engineers. We create the world and the people of our stories. Even in contemporaries or urban fantasies where the 'world' appears to be the one we are familiar with, authors still have a lot of creating to do. For example, a contemporary novel could have real life settings, ie a famous building, a street or highway, or particular events but we must still create the people in the novel and we must create their stories and conflict .

For a Science Fiction or Science Fantasy author like me though, the real fun is creating the alien world of our story. It isn't always easy. In fact, it can be time consuming and difficult. It can also be fascinating. But where do you start?
