Shake it Off: Learning to Love the One Star Review by Lissa Trevor

One of the things new authors should never do is read reviews of their work. Reviews are for the potential reader. They are not constructive criticism for an author to learn how to make their next work better. That’s what you have beta readers, editors, or critique partners for. However, it’s easier said than done not to head on over to Goodreads or Amazon, just to check out your rankings. Once your there, it’s just a matter of scrolling down to check out the reviews.

The rating system on both Goodreads and Amazon are very subjective. To give you an example, I know someone who rates a book 3 stars if they really liked it. They reserve five stars to those authors on their “must buy” lists. I know someone else that if they liked that same book just as much would give it 5 stars. Yet another reviewer will never give a one star or a five star review because nothing is perfect and nothing is unredeemable. I’ve seen instances of friends and families leaving five stars, and on the other end of the spectrum one reviewer, who hates romance novels, will go out of his way to give all romance novels a one star – just because he doesn’t like the genre.

In Medium Well, the first book in my Medium trilogy for Berkley InterMix (to be released February 19), my heroine is a singer and musician in a band called the Changelings. Frankly, I don’t remember where I got that name, and I may well have come up with it just because I needed a name that seemed vaguely supernatural. Anyway, the point I want to make here is that the name itself really didn’t have any bearing on the plot. I didn’t think much more about it until I got the manuscript back from the copyeditor. He’d added a marginal note, pointing out that there was a band in Atlanta called the Changelings, and advising me that I needed to check to see if the name was copyrighted.

Who Has Time To Market? By Deborah Riley-Magnus

        Published: December 23rd, 2012  Views: 380

Time. Such an astounding commodity but oh how hard it is to gain and maintain, especially for writers and authors. Most of us are wives or husbands, take care of children or elderly parents, work full time jobs and still squeeze in time for our communities or churches and, of course our writing. Everyone gets the same 24 hours in any given day, so how on earth can we be expected to fit in time to market our books?
The writing part of this equation is fueled with inspiration and the other parts are chalk full of commitment and responsibility … but that marketing part is filled with anxiety and sometimes resentment. The first key to accomplishing this all-important task is finding the simplicity needed to make it all work for us.

At one time or another, all authors are rookies, newbies, debut authors, first-timers. We think our manuscript is flawless when we send it in to the publisher, and it never is. It isn't flawless when we aren't rookies either, as our editors often tell us.

Not that I'm a seasoned writer by any means, but at almost three years in as a published author, I've been edited by some really good people and by some who left much to be desired, but with each edit, I've learned something.

About a year ago, I parted ways with my former publisher and went solo. I now have four self-published novels out, and my figures have turned black for this calendar year.

Everyone talks about the expenses and problems of indie authors: formatting, editing, covers, whether to go digital, and a host of others. I’m learning to handle them with varying degrees of efficiency and thrift. But the biggest problem for a self-pubbed author is promotion.
