A Light at the End of the Tunnel?

I know, I know -- be careful what you wish for. "The light at the end of the tunnel is the light of the oncoming train" (or words to that effect).

BUT -- there may be a light at the end of February's tunnel. I swear, it's been the longest month. Each week has presented enormous challenges. A funeral, a root canal, unpleasant legal hassles ... will this month never end?

However, there was a bright spot in the month. I reviewed a book I wrote several months ago now that it's fresh again. That's how I do it, I let it sit for months then I re-read it and am always surprised that, hey, I wrote it, and it's not that bad. There are a few tweaks here and there, but overall, yeah, I'm happy with it. I am sending it off to my formatter for prep to be released in March.

In addition to some writing goals (more on that later), some writer friends suggested that we choose a word to be our theme or inspiration or descriptor for our upcoming year.

Mine is flexibility. I have the sneaking suspicion that if I can be more flexible, I'll be less stressed. If an appointment makes me run late, I think, "I'm flexible. I can manage this. No problem." If something unexpected happens, I pause and think, "I'm flexible. This can be dealt with. Stay calm."

    Flexible. I'm flexible.

I forgot how energizing it can be to hang out with a bunch of writers. Last month I had my annual getaway with a group of writers. We go to a casino, hang out, brainstorm books, gamble, and generally have a great time.

Nothing is off limits in terms of brainstorming. You can toss out the most outrageous idea possible and we are obligated to help you figure out how to make it work. In the process, I find my mind finds new possibilities in my current Work in Progress, or in other ideas that I discarded as being too tricky or tough to do.

I've been in charge of planning 2 reunions this year: family reunion (planned with cousins & my sister) in which 50 or so people appeared. And my class reunion, coming up this weekend, for which we expect 60 or more people.

I always find it awkward at parties of this kind to talk about my writing career. Inevitably I'll be cornered by someone who "wants to write a book" or who's written one and "needs to find a publisher." They'll ask me how I've done it -- "how do you write and work full time?" "How did you find your publisher?" "What happens once you get published?" and the kicker, "how come you're still working? Can't you retire?"

I didn't think I'd do it, but I did. Last weekend I wrote 30,000 words. I just sat down and powered my way through chapters 11-17. 6 chapters, roughly 5000 words each (I don't do a true word count until I'm sure I'm done with it).

I have a lot of editing to do. I need to go back and layer in some motivation, add the senses (touch, taste, sight, sound, smell). That's always my fall-down, adding those details. I'll also need to search for repetitive phrasing, over-used words, etc.

But the major bones are there. I'll pick away at it for this week, then I'll set it aside for a few months until I'm sure I remember next to nothing about the plot. I'll pick it up again, edit it with fresh eyes, then send it to my beta reader.

    So what's the tally?

I am finally making progress on my book that I started in June. To be honest, I think I'm tired of having it looming over me, in the back of my mind, so I let it come to the forefront and occupy my brain in my waking moments.

What does this mean? I expect to have a first draft done by mid-September. I had hoped to have it done by Labor Day, but I have had house guests (so no time to write) and unexpected travel (no time to write).

Let's say I wrap up the first draft in mid-September. That means 3 months, start to finish. Toss in one more week for revisions, then I'll revisit it again later in the year, before sending it off to my editor/beta reader.

I had an email conversation with someone a month or so ago when I talked about how I juggle so many releases. I promised to check in with my progress on my latest book.

I started Woulds (the Robin Hood book) on June 7 or thereabouts. Note when I say "I started" I mean that I actually started writing the book. I had already done some research into the Robin Hood tales, gathered facts for my back story for the characters, and did some research into locations, etc.

I'm in the Midwest, and we're in a drought here. It's not Major yet, but we haven't had much rain, it's been hot and windy, and there's no significant rain predicted for the foreseeable future. So the D word is being bandied about.

Authors go through drought, too. There are times when we're just burned out, have no more ideas, no more energy, no more 'umph' to keep going. I know that I've certainly slowed down since I started writing seriously in 2007. Back then, I could easily do 4 or 5 books a year, many of which were pretty good, some of which needed some serious editing.

Did you see the article in the NY Times about how authors are feeling pressure to produce more than one book a year? Here's a link in case you missed it (it caused some fuss around the blogesphere for a while):

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/bu...-slacking.html

    My response to this?

Well, duh. I've produced a minimum of 3 books a year since I started publishing. One year I had 7 books out: 3 were re-releases, but still, I had 7 books to promote. Some authors I know are saying that quality will suffer if you have to 'pump out' more than 1 book.

I read and re-read that manuscript. I had a beta reader go through it. I read it again. I had another reader go through it. I read it again. Then I had it converted to upload on Kindle, etc,. and I proofed it on the Kindle.

And damn, but there's a wrong word in the wrong place in about the ninth paragraph in the book. It should read "....where I sat now." What is there is "...where I sat know."

If you've been reading my posts, either here or at the other spots where I blog, you'll know that my DH and I are involved in a Legal Matter. The purchaser of our former home has threatened to sue us because of defects which we should have known about and therefore, should have disclosed.

For the record: no, we didn't know about these supposed problems. They are problems to her, they weren't to us (to whit: the steps leading up the path from the garage to the house. We put them in. No, they aren't code. They're unusual little garden steps. Now she claims they're hazardous. After she walked up those stairs dozens of times before the sale).

I've been on an Oscar Wilde kick lately. I just saw "Earnest" and today I will be seeing "Gross Indecency", a play about the trials of OW back in the day. I fully expect to be amazed by "how the mighty are fallen" by the time the play is over.

In many ways our world has changed a lot in the 100+ years since Oscar Wilde was ruined by that scandal. But you know, when I say "our world" I mean the world I know--America, middle-class, somewhat liberal, and with no pressing financial worries. In many parts of the Big World, there are still fears about being gay or being white or being black or being female.

I remember when I first started in publishing, lo those many years ago (6 or so), that I thought published authors had a secret handshake or something. It was like a secret club and no one wanted to share the secret about how they got published.

Then I became published and I realized there really isn't a secret handshake. It's hard work and luck, combined. Trends come and go, and sometimes you're in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you hit that right combination of characters and plot and setting and BINGO, you have a book that catches some people by storm. It might catch a reviewer's eye, or a reader who yells about it or maybe it'll be the media. It's luck and hard work and luck.

I've reached that point in my life where I don't need any Christmas gifts. Oh, don't get me wrong. It's fun to get them, but I don't look forward to it like I did when I was a kid.

Remember that breathless sense of anticipation on Christmas Eve? That "I wonder if IT will be under the tree (or in my stocking)?" Remember that feeling of "Wow! It's here!" or "Rats. It's not." I hope kids today still feel that, but I wonder if they do. It seems like a lot of kids today don't have to wait for the Big Present. I'm not sure quite how it happens, but many kids seem to get everything they want.

At this time of year, we all tally up the things we're thankful for: good health, a good job (or any job!), family, friends, success...

It's odd that we do this sort of tally only occasionally. I suppose if we did it more often, it would lose the power to amaze, but still, don't you think we should take some time more often (say, weekly) to stop and think how lucky we all are?

Because we are all lucky. If you're reading this, you can read (you're literate), you have access to a computer, you have enough free time to read a trivial bit of writing (I'm humble), and my words are not censored (I don't think) and they are free for you to read.

For the first time in my writing career, I have had writer's block. I just haven't wanted to sit down and finish the damn book. First time since 2005 this has happened.

Gee, I guess I was due, right?

Let me hasten to say this hasn't bothered me too much. I'm a bit peeved I can't slough my way through this book. I think it's a good book, maybe one of my best, but it's like pulling teeth to write it. I think I've discovered the Cause of the block:

    Now for today's news:

For the first time in years, I'm not enthused about writing. I've had occasional moments like this before, but this has been dragging on for a month or more.
