When Authors Give Back

One of the things I love most about Savvy Authors is the tagline Writers Helping Writers. I believe in paying it forward, what goes around comes around, do unto others and that karma can be your best friend or a real bitch.
My favorite published authors are the ones who offer more than just a copy of their latest book at release time. The ones who stand out for me, and who I'll follow around anywhere, are the ones who offer words of advice to aspiring authors in the forums. The ones who promote their follow authors by writing reviews. The ones who run contests for critiques and who'll take on a mentoree.
You may be thinking okay - but what can the unpublished author do to give back? Easy. Be supportive and kind. Respond to questions if you know the answers. Help promote those authors just starting out.
Now, your second question will probably be what brought on all these ramblings about giving back? Yep, I'm going to tell you.
My critique partner, Christine Bell, who is now multi-pubbed with multiple publishing houses has a release coming out today. So, to help promote her I wanted to blog about her newest release. She emailed me and said she wanted to do something more than just give away a copy of a book. Christine wanted to offer a 10 page critique. Pride swelled in my chest, and I thought YES - she gets it! This is the type of author I want to associate myself with, and now it becomes my job to get the word out and it all circles back around to my list of cliches in the first paragraph.
I'll leave you with the thought - no writer is an island. Stop by my BLOG and leave a comment for a chance to win a 10 page critique. Buy Christine's latest release, take the time to give it a review, and well - I think you get the picture.
See you around the board,
Melinda
