Romance in the Backseat

Where are all these Publishers coming from!

Rating: 2 votes, 3.50 average.
Okay Everybody!

I learned about 3 new ones today alone. Publishers seem to be
everywhere and my head is spinning trying to keep up - So as bloggers
and reviewers and authors what are our thoughts? Where are you
hearing about new ones? Let's talk because it has been at the front
of my mind lately.

Here is a list of just the ones I am vaguely familiar with. Less then a dozen have I read any of their titles. How about you?

You can add Turquoise morning press to your list of publishers. I'd never heard of until this week when not one, not two but three of my rwa group members signed with them!

I've read from whispers, liquid silver books, samhain, noble, loose-id, ellora's cave, cerridwen, wild rose and possibly bought a book or two here or there over the yrs. I've heard of probably 75% of those named though don't frequent their sites.

    Hey Merlyssa,

If you have heard of 75% of them you are ahead of the curve!

Yes, there is Turquoise Morning Press and Sapphire Nights Books - same owner. It is really relative to who you know to if you have heard of one of these pubs. I hear of pubs by meeting authors and them saying things to review sites and blogs.

I hope others will share who they have read.
Me - EC, Samhain, Loose ID, Noble Romance, Amber Quill, Purple Sword Publications, Ravenous Romance

There's also Keith Publications (http://keithpublications.com/), which officially launches in September. I'm editing submissions for them ... and there are some good reads in there!

Remember to check out a publisher before submitting to them. There are as many scammers, crooks, and inept mean-wells in publishing these days as there are real publishers. New publishers, unless they are started by people already in the business, are a gamble.

Good places to check out publishers are

    Writers Beware: http://accrispin.blogspot.com/
    Preditors and Editors: http://pred-ed.com/

Also, ask around where pro writers hang out. Authors will tell you privately if a publisher is a poor one. If you are interested in epublishing, join EPIC before you sell that book to get good advice from those who follow this market closely.

I have a series of blogs on deciding what kind of publisher you want--traditional paper, epublishers, small press, etc., and how to go from there to find the right publisher in that media. Go to http://mbyerly.blogspot.com and click on the label "picking a publisher."

Educate yourself to protect yourself in this dangerous business.

I've heard of quite a few of them. Marilyn's advice to check out publishers before submitting is very good. I'd also add that it's a good idea to check out their websites to see what their online stores look like. If they pass this test, purchase one of their books and look at the editing, the covers, the type of story etc. You can also email some of the authors and ask about their experiences. Most authors don't mind this. They'll say if they do.
