When you have finally completed a novel after months or years of writing and rewriting, the last thing you want to do is crunch down your masterpiece into the three tiny sentences of a pitch.

Too bad. It has to be done.

Has this ever happened to you? You are minding your own business simply working on your pitch when suddenly you have the overwhelming desire to pound your head against the desk. Please don’t. Blood on manuscript pages don’t help in making a sale. Instead take a deep breath and pick out the highlights your story.


Writing a pitch requires the same creativity as writing a novel, but a pitch also needs to be infused with business savvy.

If you want to pique the interest of an agent or editor with your pitch, it’s best to jump right in. With only three lines in your pitch, there is no extra space to wax poetic. Get down to business and tell us what the story is about.
And speaking of getting down to business…

Two elements to always include in your pitch are the title and genre. These might seem like two small pieces of the pitching puzzle but they are really important.

The title is the first impression. Book titles should be so pithy, evocative, or charming that they compel someone to pick up the book and read the back. Take time coming up with your title – it matters. A smoking hot cover doesn’t hurt either, but that is beyond our purview.

If your manuscript is complete and you are ready to begin the submission process, your next step is to write a killer pitch! It takes time and continuous fine-tuning to craft a pitch that will grab the attention of agents and editors.
