To understand modern men, we need to go back in time to early humans. As fiction writers, you all have vivid imaginations. Take a moment to visualize a prehistoric campsite--perhaps a cave. See the men leaving the cave to go out hunting. Imagine the women going about their lives at home. Got the picture? The male brain evolved to fit ancient man's life circumstances. He was the defender of his clan and territory. He was the hunter, risking his life to bring home meat to feed his family.

When a woman is frustrated, annoyed, or resentful with a man, her feelings show in her tone of voice. Her voice may or may not become louder, but her tone certainly becomes higher and/or sharper. A woman feels justified in speaking this way because she thinks she’s showing the depth of her feelings—if he hears how upset she is, not just from her words but the way she says them—then he’ll realize why she’s upset. Most women instinctively understand the reason for the tone. They might not like that edgy sound when they hear it from one of their female family members or friends, they might feel hurt or angry when it’s aimed at them, but they don’t tend to take it as personally as men do. (Unless we are talking about a mother dealing with a teenage daughter.)

Summer. A time for skimpy clothes, bathing suits, and female insecurities. I have always hated shopping for bathing suits—full length mirrors, unflattering light, ugh. I try on about twenty suits before I find one (two if I’m lucky) that fits and looks good. I don’t mind wearing a bikini when I’m in good shape. When I’m not in good shape, I stick to one pieces. And I know I’m not alone.

Welcome to my new blog on understanding the differences between men and women. Some of you reading might have taken my online class: Understanding Men, or heard me speak at RWA national or a local chapter on the topic. This blog is more about understanding men than women because the majority of Savvy Authors readers are women, and so have an infinite curiosity about why men think and behave the way they do. That doesn’t mean that I won’t post about women as well. Part of what makes this information interesting is the contrasts between the genders.
