Pitch perfect: how to hook an editor

Want to stand out from the crowd? You’ll need a hook. If you handle it right, this will be your dream editor or an agent’s first impression of your book. It’s what sets you and your work apart from everyone else.

Sound good? It is. When your hook is both strong and memorable, you’ll have that editor thinking about your book and anticipating it long after your initial meeting is over.

GOTHIC OR NOT? By: Jane Toombs

Does a gothic absolutely have to have a mysterious hero as a key factor? If so, then what were many of the books I wrote as gothics and publishers accepted and sold as gothics? Readers had no trouble believing these books were gothics, either. So from my experience, the mysterious hero doesn’t have to be there.

    ...make a bourbon sling.

I was handed a Big Lemon just a few days before Christmas. My web site went away. It's a long, annoying story but here's the gist: my web site was hosted with Big Company. We used to get our Internet service from Big Company but stopped when it became too pricy (and when the Spousal Unit's company quit chipping in on the cost). We switched but didn't switch our hosting from Big Company because we were told that was okay -- keep the hosting, move the service.

As a reader, when I’m in a story frame-of-mind the world around me dissolves, and I live for a brief time inside the story world. But what makes this work? It doesn’t if I can’t get inside the skin, heart, mind, and soul of the protagonist. (This can apply to any POV character.)

Not only does this magical transportation happen with good writing, but I, as reader, WANT it to occur. I want to feel what that character is feeling, her goals are mine, and I fear her fears. This not only happens with books but with movies as well.

Flash Fiction 2: Using story elements to make your prose sizzle By: Jim Harrington

        Published: January 19th, 2011

Interest in flash fiction continues to grow. New publications go online all the time. Many editors attribute this growth to shortening attention spans. Others believe it’s because the writing is improving. Whatever the reason, the flash market is growing and more publications are paying for stories (from $2 to $25). The down side of this growth in paying markets is that the competition for acceptances is stiffer. With my series of flash courses, I hope to provide you with information that, when put to use, will help your stories rise to the top of the slush pile.

It’s been a long time since I revisited some of my older blog posts, although I’ve been thinking of re-doing the stuff on emotional structure. I still remember being all dead-serious with my thirty buck Post-it easel. My first and to date only in-person workshop. They’d come to hear easy tips for Nano and got some kind of weird garble--I was way too inexperienced, trying to be all academic.

But, I got a question, and I love questions...

Fog shrouded streets, clockwork machines and fiendish devices powered by steam, diabolical criminal geniuses determined to take over or change the world, and the forces of good armed with creations part 19th century and part futuristic, and dressed to kill (if need be) in corsets, sweeping skirts and parasols or proper suits, bowlers (or Stetsons), canes and goggles. Everyone needs brass goggles! One never knows when boarding an airship, or a Darwinian creation, will be required to chase after a group of fiends, be they human, partially human, or of the paranormal persuasion. That’s what Steampunk is – in part. It’s also so much more.

I put my backpack down, and leaned back against the door. Billy turned back toward me. “I’ve got your back,” he murmured.

As a reader, one of the things that always drives me crazy is when an author uses the same word too many times, and too closely together. This is known as a word echo. Word echoes *can* be used for a particular effect (usually done on by the author on purpose), but often it’s the result of sloppy writing.

Do you have what it takes to be a fiction writer? Here's a true or false test to find out. Be brutally honest. The only person you will be cheating is yourself. Choose TRUE if the statement describes you or what you believe, FALSE if it does not.

We’ve all had them. Terrible reviews, harsh critiques, painful feedback, and the inevitable form rejection letter. If you haven’t experienced this degrading aspect of a writer’s career, no worries. You will. Gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair will ensue.

For those of us already in the club, I raise my shot glass to you. If you’re anything like me you have a set series of moods that follow the crappy news, leading up to what I like to call: Dawn Watch. Here’s why…

There are many online resources (including right here at SavvyAuthors) for forming critique partnerships. Most of us, however, will find our CPs by trial and error. By agreeing in the beginning to a few basic rules and principles, you can avoid making errors and being a trial to one another.

I learned to cook from my grandmothers, who’d learned from their mothers. They rarely measured anything, and used what ever they happened to have lying around the kitchen in the days when there were iceboxes and root cellars, and the milkman filled a metal box every morning.

Trial and error taught them how big the pillow of flour should be, when a pinch of salt was enough or if you needed enough to fill the palm of your hand. They could see and feel the right consistency, and tasted everything. Was the batter sweet enough? Did the meatballs have enough garlic?
