I have a question. What if you want to deal with a cause or charity that might work for your genre, but doesn't pertain to your book. Like I'm big on the bullying cause. Can I still mention I support it, etc. even though it might not be part of my book?

Greta,

First, regarding your press release, it looks like you cheated a little and simply installed your information where applicable. The point of a press release format is to get the message across in ways that make a person sit up and take notice, and want to review the book or interview the author. You should be a little more powerful with it, and be sure to kick in something punchy about your book other than just the 25 words.

For example ... a line like ... Fairytopia publishing introduces something Forbidden to fantasy readers from first time author ...

See? Now you've kicked it up a notch without getting too flowery, you've made it your own. Otherwise the press personnel would receive a hundred press releases a day where the name of the book is in the exact same place and the name of the publisher is in the exact same place. It's not easy to write a powerful press release. You have to make this yours.

Regarding the charity, if the charity does not relate to your book, it's just a side bit of info and will be brushed aside. Everyone supports some charity, but if there's bullying in your book, you just may have something. Also ... supporting a charity in this case means that a portion of the profit from the sale of the book goes to that charity. Not just that you randomly support the charity. The goal here is to have prospective buyers WANT to also support that charity by buying your book. It's publicity news.

Maritza,

Nice effort! But I have a few crits.

First of all, avoid using the term Chic Lit, the better term in the publishing world for your fiction genre is Womens Fiction.

Second, your description of your book is way too long ... stick to the 25 word pitch. If that's done correctly, you need no more. You may be able to get around the issue of "too much storytelling" by perhaps stating fact about the real events this story surrounds, then doing your 25 word pitch ... MAKING IT VERY CLEAR THAT THIS IS A PIECE OF FICTION based on true historical events.

Remember, a MEMOIR is NON-FICTION, not chic lit, womens fiction or a novel. So if Ousted is a REAL MEMOIR, it is NOT CHICK LIT OR ANY OTHER KIND OF FICTION. Unfortunately, the information in this release is too confusing for me to tell if the book is fiction or non-fiction.

You need a lot of clarification with the elements of this press release. Can you try again? Give it a strong 25 word tight pitch, give it the correct genre if it really is fiction ... or make sure you emphasize that it is not fiction by stating that it is a true story and a real memoir.

Margaret,

Not bad. What's the title of the press release? Can you add a little more punch about the book, for example, you do play a little word play and state somewhere in here that "intergalactic decisions have made the book available at ..." just for a little kick.

Also, like a few others, try not to simply take the press releases from the lesson and plug in your information. It's a good place to start, but we're writers, we can take this challenge and do something seriously personalized without going too far. Writing press releases is as tough as writing that 25 word pitch because it really tests how we look at our books.

Maybe give it another try?

Hi Maritza,

Much better. Two things ...

1) You should not have more than 25 words for the description of the book, so I'm thinking we really don't need the sentence beginning with "In the end you will be left ..." It takes the press release from NEWS, to simply a promotion for the book.

2) I'm still a little confused. Is this a piece of fiction placed within real events? Or is it a TRUE MEMOIR of a real person? s it YOUR true-life story? Or is it a fiction using the memoir format as a storytelling vehicle of the novel? This has to be made very clear here. What has me thrown is the use of the word "Novelist" (and previous use of chit lit or womens fiction) since a novel is fiction, and a real memoir is non-fiction.

3) The political analyst speaker at the launch party is genius!

As soon as we get the contradictory words from this and make it clear if this is a fiction (novel, or fictionalized memoir) or non-fiction (true memoir) we'll have this perfected.

H Tracy!

Nice try, but you're missing something. We have the who, YOU. We have the what, THE BOOK. We have the why, BECAUSE THE BOOK IS BEING LAUNCHED and we have the when in the DATELINE. What we don't have here is the where. You completely skipped over WHERE TO BUY THE BOOK!

We also have a little too much book promotion going on here. This should have no more than the 25 word pitch as a description of the book. Some of it is heavy description of the cemetary and educating the media on its condition (note: never try to educate the media, lol. They'll catch you in a mistake every time!) Another way to do this might be to actually make this an announcement that there will be a book signing and author speaking event at the cemetery, a brief explanation of the cemetary's condition, then the comment that a portion of proceeds go for the maintenance of the historical treasure the cemetery is.

Just a thought.

Thanks for your feedback. I have several questions!

I'm confused about your feedback, "You completely skipped over WHERE TO BUY THE BOOK!" Was my "where" information too general: Purchase Girl Three at online retailers and select bookstores? Do I need to be more specific?

I totally get what you mean about never trying to educate the media, and I did spend a lot of alphabetic capital telling about the cemetery. What if there is not a booksigning/speaking event to promote? I will know what to do should those plans come to frition, but if I wanted to keep this a general release and inlcude the charity angle, do I just tone down the cemetery info?

Is this any better?

Tracy :)

Tracey,

The first thing I want to make clear to you and anyone else thinking about press releases, is that there is no ONE press release or ONE general release. Press releases are a part of a Press Campaign. For example,

1) Announcement of the book's release
2) Announcement of a great review of or forward to the book by a prominent person
3) Announcement of additional availability of the book
4) Announcement of a book launch event
5) Announcement of the author speaking or doing book signing at a location
6) Announcement of the author beginning a tour over several cities or states
7) Announcement of extraordinary sales of the book
8) etc ...

No press campaign gives everything in one shot. The point is to become someone a particular media person really begins to recognize, someone who always gives them news, and someone who shows professionalism while passing along NEWS information. (I teach Press Campaigns and Publicity in the Tantric Publicity for Author's workshop scheduled in late April)

The point of this particular lesson assignment is to understand the format and clarity of press release information and to utilize your 25 word pitch to create impact for your story.

For your release, yes, you were too vague with the WHERE. If your book is really coming out, you REALLY want people to know where to buy it. Include links and addresses of the book stores if you can. Oh NOTE: a link to your website is NEVER a good idea to do in lew of actually giving a buy link. What you're doing when you do that is you're asking the media to do their own work to find the buy link for your book. They won't. Make sure you give them what they need to go directly to the purchase point or store locations.

Also, remember that if you get lucky, send this to all the newspapers you want to or hire a press release distribution service to get it out and the newspaper does want to do a story, MANY, MANY times all they do is reprint your press release. If everything isn't there, including buy links and store names/ locations, how effective is that?

Lastly, as far as an event ... you never know if you can do it until you ask. It seems like a cool idea to get your support reasoning across for the cemetery. I like the "This look-over-your-shoulder" line, yes keep it. It's not too much book promo. Just be careful when explaining the cemetery's plight.

My apologizes for posting to the wrong thread. When I tried this the first time, it said this thread was closed. Sorry!!

Dateline, February 16,2011, New York City: Today marks the beginning of high jinx on the high seas with the launch of The Cruise Ship Chronicles, a new cozy mystery series by short story author Mary Johnson. This tale follows the antics of an incurably nosy and charmingly bungling widow as she tries to solve an apparent murder at sea. Solving crime replaces seeing the sights in A is for Aggrandizement of the Sea the first book in The Cruise Ship Chronicles, available in bookstores nationally.
###

This is very nice, but you need to be WAY more specific with your WHERE - the locations for purchasing the book. You can add to "bookstores nationally" with a few of the big chain names like B&N, and Borders. Don't forget Amazon, posting the buy link on Amazon for your book will really boost sales. Never be vague in a press release.

Good Job, Mary (Considering all the difficulty with getting the thing posted, lol. Aren't the SavvyAuthors moderators wonderful! They fixed the issue really fast!)

“CITY OF ANGELS” BRINGS FRINGE SCIENCE TO L.A.
January 1, 2013. Los Angeles: Multi-published author Lila Dubois marries the fringe sciences of SciFi with the gritty realism of Los Angeles’s abandoned outskirts in City of Angeles, the first book in her thrilling new Urban Fantasy series. Kidnapped and experimented on, 20 year-old orphan Sancia Marquez manifests supernatural powers the world hasn’t seen since Tenochtitlan fell. She must decide whether to use those powers to reclaim her normal life, or to embrace the darkness within her and save the other test subjects. Lila,

This is SPECTACULAR ... until we got to the very end. I'd mentioned it before and will say it again ... NEVER simply post your website as a catch all location for important information. The media will not go there. Truthfully, it's YOUR JOB to tell them the vital info right on that page. Give them a phone number to call for more information and the name of the person who will be answering their questions. Give them the phone number for the Museum, and even the address of the museum. Give them ALL the information.

This doesn't mean that you can't have the link to your website in the press release. In fact you should also have the Amazon purchase link for your book there too. Just never use your website link as a shortcut for not placing all important information in the release. The media will simply toss the release away as insufficient.

Otherwise, this is really great!

“DANGER ON XY-ONE” GOES AFTER PIRATES

Dateline, February 16, 2011. Lancaster, PA: Disappearing spaceships, pirates, and a hot agent. What more could a twenty-fifth century woman want? Multi-published, paranormal writer, Vicky Burkholder announces the launch of her latest novel from Ellora’s Cave Blush, Danger on Xy-One to be held from 6-8 p.m. at Independent bookseller, Aaron’s Books, on Second Friday, March, in Lititz, PA. Come dressed as your favorite pirate or space alien for a chance to win prizes. Book can be purchased online from Ellora's Cave or other online stores, but only those books purchased at the store will be signed.

(Note to instructor: Second Friday is a monthly event in town known to all surrounding towns and their papers)

Vicky,

This is great! Your event is exciting and your presentation of information is strong and informative.

But ... like a few other people, you're slacking on the WHERE. (Where to buy the book specifically) I want links to Ellora'a Cave and your book in here, I want your Amazon buy link in here as well as these "other online locations", and I want the address and phone number of the book store where this event will take place.

Always make sure you're giving the media everything they need.

Other than that, good work!
Deb

(BTW, I've been to Lancaster several times. Beautiful area! I'm originally from Pittsburgh.)

Deb:

Thanks so much for your patience!

Hi Maritza,

Much better. Two things ...

1) You should not have more than 25 words for the description of the book, so I'm thinking we really don't need the sentence beginning with "In the end you will be left ..." It takes the press release from NEWS, to simply a promotion for the book. Cut out in this next version!!

It is my true-life story, a memoir, so I guess that makes me an author not a novelist??

3) The political analyst speaker at the launch party is genius! Thanks!!:)

As soon as we get the contradictory words from this and make it clear if this is a fiction (novel, or fictionalized memoir) or non-fiction (true memoir) we'll have this perfected.

Deb

Hope I got it right!!

Anju,

Nice start.

First, the headline is way too long. Maybe something like "There's a vampire calling on the Helpline."

Second, you never ask the media if they "want to find out" anything. A press release tells them the news. So I'd take out that question.

And third, do you really not have a book title yet? Curious. How about "Lust, Blood-Hunger and the Helpline", :p lol.

Good start here. Try one more time.:D

This is good, except you cheated a little and added a LOT of words to your 25 word pitch. When you do that, the Press Release becomes less NEWS and more Book Promotion, and the media is not interested in your promotions, only your news.

I think more can be done with this to qualify you as an author. It's a little shaky, the way you plugged in that both you and your heroine are blind. You need to word that a little better and smoother. Perhaps something after the 25 word pitch like ...

Like the heroine of her book, author B.L. Bates is blind and determined to set the record straight about living with disabilities.

Also give us more information on WHERE to buy the book, including the Amazon buy link or any other online links for the purchase.

Have you considered supporting a blind services charity with a tiny percentage of your sales? Things like that go a long way toward gaining readers. Something to consider.

Good attempt here, but can you try one more time?

Greta-g, you could always have a special signing party and offer to give a portion of your sales to that charity. Exposure is important. Rent a booth at the next charitable event and give your proceeds that day to the charity.

For instance at the local whatever for Susan B. Komen for the Cure:
"For every book you buy, I will give $2.00 for the Cure."

Tie pink ribbons on your business cards or give away pink bookmarks.

You're book doesn't have to be about breast cancer. You're just willing to donate.
Just make sure it is a legit organization.

Well, actually E and Greta,

The in the case of what we're trying to accomplish in this lesson ... your book should have some connection with a charity for it to be connected and benefit both the book sales and charity for the long term. Of course, an author can and should always participate in charity events when possible and practical. But for the purpose of publicity and press releases, it really has to be news and it has to be solidly connected to the book. Otherwise it's just tagged on with hopes of getting the reporter's attention. They usually can tell those things and dismiss them.

Our goal with press releases is to gain a tight connection with the media and learn how to interconnect all our book efforts. That's why I think that for any press release, it really is important to connect the charity somehow with your book.

Colleen,

Very nice, but you missed a few things.

You're announcing the launch of the book but you never tell us where we can buy the book. All your buy links should be there as well as the addresses of bookstores carrying the book. It would be a good idea to also include the phone number and contact at The Biltmore Hotel, in Oklahoma City, just in case the press (or anyone reading the news story) wants to attend and needs to get more information.

You also state that "A portion of all proceeds will go to the Oklahoma Historical Society" but you really need to state that it's a portion of all proceeds FROM THE SALE OF THE BOOK that will go to the Oklahoma Historical Society. Never assume the press will know what you're saying. Always be extremely clear in your press releases.

Other than those few points, this is a good effort!

Nice attempt, Alice,

A few things you might want to elaborate on ... while the author is handing out bookmarks, will she also be signing books? If so, make sure you state that this is a "book signing event".

We also need a contact name and phone number in case the media wants to know more. You need to repeat that at the end of the press release as well as at the top. No clue why, it's just Press Release format and the media people always look in certain places for certain things.

The last thing here, is when you send out a real release, you don't just say "available at Amazon", you actually put the Amazon Buy link in the release.

Other than those points, good job!

Meg,

This press release is way too much book pitch and not enough news. THERE ARE 85 WORDS OF BOOK PITCH HERE! Nothing more than your 25 word pitch should be in the press release for the description of the book. Back it to that pitch and it works much better.

I like the charity and I love that you told the press that you are an artist, photographer and an author.

Don't forget to tell them where to buy the book! I know this release is about the launch party, but the book you're launching has to be sold. So include the Amazon buy links as well as all the stores where the book will be available.

PR,

The only problem with this is it's way too much book pitch and not enough news. You should have nothing more than your 25 word pitch in a press release. You can play with wording, as you successfully have in your open, but you simply can't use this much book pitch in a press release. The press isn't interested in an extended the plot or characters explanation about your book. They're interested in NEWS about it: that you're a first time author, that you're holding a book launch event, where the book can be purchased and who to contact if they have questions.

The media are very busy, very self important folks and it always pays to play the game their way. Keep things clean, sharp and NEWS, and they will respond. When they ask for more information about you and the book, you've gotten the go ahead to gush to your heart's desire, as well you should.

This is the reason we work on the 25 word POWERFUL pitch before we move on to writing press releases or sound bites.

You did a great job here, everything else is in place, just cut that pitch way back.

It's nice and succinct and I understand that you are not announcing a launch party or book event, but you still must ALWAYS add the Amazon buy links for the book and a list of stores where the book can be purchased, as well as repeating the contact's name and phone number at the end.

Also, is there a way to tighten the headline a bit? Something like ...

UNDERBELLY OF 1887 NEW YORK IMMIGRATION EXPLORED

Nothing says the title of the book has to be in the headline, and if your headline is catchy enough, you can expect the media to read further. Just a suggestion.

Good attempt!

Hi Jodi,

This has a bit too much story. Look at a book press release this way ... it needs to be 80% news and 20% pitch. Use your 25 word pitch and nothing more. Make sure you add the Amazon buy links for the book as well as book stores where the book can be purchased. Play a little bit more creatively with the book launch and hey ... OOPS ...

NOWHERE IN THIS PRESS RELEASE IS THE ACTUAL TITLE OF THE BOOK!!!

And, we don't have a headline, we need a catchy headline.

Try again, please.

Good suggestions. I decided to up the launch, make it a dream one. :-) Here's a second go. My first historical, at my agent's right now has a Prohibition theme and I always thought I would love to stage a Prohibition party with some costumed flappers and jazz. It would be held in L.A. where the book is set.

I thought about it after I posted it and thought you might say that it was too "pitch"y... This just seemed so pale... but here is the revision with the 25-word power blurb.

PR,

I know you'd like to see a LOT more story, but trust me, THIS is all the media wants to know. One thing I might suggest though, is to add some sparkle to the book launch information by perhaps calling it a "Z.O.M.B.I.E. SQUAD Neighborhood Watch Launch Party". You can even mention that guests will be asked if they are human or zombie. Just something to make it feel a little playful and interesting.

Otherwise, this is great! Nice job,

Michele,

Nice press release! You've covered the who what where why and when and you did it with a nice touch of a flare. I think I'd like to see a little more information in the form of links ... to the Summit Entertainment website, to the book's website and perhaps even the the author's website, in order to help the media flesh out as much as they can about the project.

Also, for a press release you must have a contact name and phone number, just in case Variety wants to do an interview NOW, and not wait until they receive contact after an email is sent. Remember, NEWS and the media move FAST, you need to be prepared and ready to accommodate them.

Nice work!

Jodi,

Like Meg, you've only forgotten to add Amazon or other buy links for the book or a list of book stores where the book is available. Yes, the location of the event is important but remember, you want to sell books! So how and WHERE they can buy your book is also super important. Add that info and you've got it perfect!

June, this is nice but you missed a lot of things.

Who - we know it's you.
What - we know it's a book launch party
Why - because your book is out
When - OOPS when is this party?
Where - OOPS Where is the party and where can I buy the book?

You need to add information about the address of the part location, AND you need to make sure your list the places online and bookstores, there the book can be purchased.

I like to also suggest that you repeat the contact information right at the end of the press release. And you need a DATELINE at the beginning.

Nice work, just needs to be finished.

Thanks, Deb.

So I need to put the date and place in the body of the paragraph even though its in the header? I will rework it.
A lot of mystery writers have signings at this bookstore here in Houston, but they are very strict about not advertising any other sales sites in their marketing. They state on their site that only books purchased in their store can be signed during their events. But they do have a lot of fans and their events are well attended. I will try a redo. Thanks, Deb for a great workshop.

Yes you need to put that information in the BODY of the Press Release. The press contact will only look to the top if the information in the bottom interests them, so make it juicy and filled with info.

Also, this is a PRESS RELEASE, not a promotional poster or advertising. It's YOUR information to the MEDIA, you're making the effort and paying for the postage or press release distribution fee ... not the bookstore. This release goes out to the media and needs to tell them everything. If the bookstore wants only their store mentioned, they'd have to send out their own press release. This is about YOU, YOUR BOOK, WHERE IT CAN BE PURCHASED and WHERE IT CAN BE FOUND.

What the bookstore really wants is bodies in their store, so whatever you do, they'll be happy with. BUT, if you take the info from this press release (complete with all the buy links and other stores where the book is available) and display it at the book signing table, that's just uncool. I'd understand why they'd be a little upset.

The best thing to remember here ... THE MOST MAJOR THING TO REMEMBER HERE ... is a press release IS NOT promotion or advertising.

Deb
